On the one hand. This is awesome news! (From a March 26th posting on MSNBC.)
WASHINGTON – The U.S. and Russia sealed the first major nuclear weapons treaty in nearly two decades Friday, agreeing to slash the former Cold War rivals’ warhead arsenals by nearly one-third and talking hopefully of eventually ridding a fearful world of nuclear arms altogether.President Barack Obama said the pact was part of an effort to “reset” relations with Russia that have been badly frayed. And at home the agreement gave him the biggest foreign policy achievement of his presidency, just days after he signed the landmark health care overhaul that has been his domestic priority.Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will sign the agreement April 8 in Prague, where Obama gave a major speech on doing away with nuclear arms one year ago. The city is the capital of the Czech Republic, a former Soviet satellite and now a NATO member.
Needless to say, this is the biggest development in arms control in decades. And while it’s not a complete draw down, it’s a solid step in the right direction. And he should get credit for it.
On the other hand, this is really awful news in every sense of the word!
Seriously, when someone uses the words, “Not even the Bush Administration went this far” to describe something you’re doing, you need to sit down and rethink your strategy.
The sad part about this is that Obama probably won’t get the push back this warrants. The congressional Democrats won’t say anything for fear of playing into the GOP’s narrative of them being weak on terrorism. The GOP won’t say anything because they don’t want to upset that narrative. And the bulk of the American Public won’t care because to their thinking any “terrorist” getting smoked is a good thing. (Without taking into mind the larger issue of targeting an American Citizen without due process.) The only one making the complaints will be us Dirty Fucking Hippies. And as Obama has proved in the last couple of weeks with the lack of support of the public option and his stance on offshore drilling, there’s seems to be political capital in punching us hippies in the nuts.
In an odd sense, it was easier to deal with Bush because practically everything he did was generally awful. Reacting in horror and disgust almost because came our default setting. Considering that most of what Obama is doing is mostly positive, when he does something like this, it’s gobsmacking. It’s like watching your usually responsible brother in law blow his paycheck at the track.
But then we take a breath and remind ourselves that no President is perfect. Hell, even F.D.R. started internment camps for the Japanese during World War II. But that doesn’t mean we have to tolerate those imperfections.
